About 700 miles off the coast of Costa Rica, which owns it, Cocos Island is a protected park. Only two Costa Rican coast guardsmen and (now, we understand) a park ranger live on the island. It is a beautiful place, with some of the best "large animal" scuba diving in the world. The water is magnificently clear and you can swim with manta rays and hammerhead sharks. Incredible place
